Riverfest and Classic Boat and Motor Show coming up

Quincy residents have several community activities available on Sunday, Sept. 18, to attend.
Riverfest, located in Kesler Park, is an arts festival that includes artist booths, food vendors, performances and children’s art activities.
Quincy Society of Fine Arts member organizations and community organizations will also have booths to offer information about their programs.
The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Riverfest is sponsored by the Quincy Park District, Refreshment Services Pepsi and the Quincy Society of Fine Arts.
As a part of the festival at the riverfront, the Quincy Classic Boat and Motor Show will have a display of in-water boats along with a swap meet and static display of motors.
There is also a classic boat parade at 2 p.m.
Frontier Settlement Days has been moved from its usual June date to Sept. 18 at the Log Cabin Village on Quinsippi Island. The theme Civil War Call to Arms will include re-enactors, a school display with children’s activities, a moonshine display, needleworkers, a hospital display and many more items of interest.
At Broadway and Eighth streets, participants can tour the new Kroc Center during the grand opening. A worship and dedication service is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m.

Lonnie Lynn Orchestra plays Big Band Fest in Hannibal

The Great River Jazz Preservation Society presents the Lonnie Lynn Orchestra Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Quality Inn and Suites Convention Center, located just off Highway 35 west of Hannibal, Mo. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., and no advance reservations are required. A cash bar and food along with a dance floor will be available. Admission is $20 for adults and free for students and children.
The Lonnie Lynn Orchestra is a local ballroom dance band, playing music from the 1930s and ’40s with some country music and Latin rhythms on the side. The band consists of 10 musicians and a female vocalist.
Lonnie hosts Big Band Fests twice a year. These dances feature the Lonnie Lynn Orchestra in addition to a guest band — providing hours of continuous dancing music.
The concert schedule for the 2011-2012 season also includes the following bands: New Red Onion Jazz Babies, Nov. 13; Cornet Chop Suey, March 18; and Gateway City Big Band, May 20.
The Great River Jazz Preservation Society is a nonprofit organization. Patron tickets may be purchased for $60 making the cost per concert $15. Patron tickets may be purchased in advance and picked up on the night of the first concert or can be purchased that night.

Dave Herrero next up at Blues in the District

Dave Herrero and his band will take the stage Friday, Aug. 26, for Blues in the District at Washington Park.
Herrero is a seasoned professional who has been blessed to play some very exclusive shows including the 2009 Chicago Blues Fest, Old Town Blues Festival, Sun Prairie Blues Festival and Springfield Blues Festival, just to name a few. He began playing professionally at the tender age of 20 in Jacksonville, Fla. Initially, he was largely influenced by Muddy Waters, Albert King and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, which prompted his move to Austin, Texas. He has since located to Chicago.

Watercolors by Kelly Eddington

Culver-Stockton College will host the work of Kelly Eddington, a renowned watercolor artist, Aug. 25 through Sept. 23 in the Mabee Art Gallery. An opening reception will be held Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. with a gallery talk beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Eddington’s paintings have been exhibited in solo and group venues throughout Illinois and are in private and public collections including WIU’s permanent library collection. Her works have been awarded at a number of juried shows. She has been an award-winning Illinois art educator for 17 years, teaching at Oregon High School and Unity High School.

Trio Con Brio first in Sunday Music series

The Sunday Music series begins on Aug. 21 with a concert by the Trio Con Brio.
The event will take place in the First Union Congregational Church, 105 N. 12th St., at 4 p.m. The public is invited, and there is no charge for admission.
Trio Con Brio will present three charming and lively works: Phantasiestucke, Opus 22 by Robert Schumann; Trio in G Major, Hob. XV, 25 by Joseph Haydn; and Variations, Opus 12a “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu” by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Members of Trio Con Brio are Leonora Suppan-Gehrich, piano; Brian Gehrich, violin; and Helga Winold, cello. The ensemble traveled to Europe in June and performed concerts in Austria and Italy.

‘Fang’ premieres in Quincy Aug. 19

The premier venue for “Fang” is One restaurant, located at 600 Hampshire, on Friday, Aug. 19. The public is invited to view this not-yet-rated film, which is expected to be listed at a PG-13 viewing. A cocktail hour with the actors at 8 p.m. kicks off the event, followed by a 9 p.m. showing of the two-hour film.
All proceeds will benefit the Quincy Salvation Army Emergency Shelter and tickets are $8. Tickets will be available at the door the night of the event beginning at 7 p.m.
“We want to give something back to the city of Quincy, to say thank you to everyone for their gracious hospitality and assistance last June,” said Kurt Struss, director.
In the film, ancient cultures clash when an ages old vampire clan’s fortune dwindles and they seek to take control of an east coast powerhouse. Nothing is as it seems as Michael Venzetti, heir apparent to the powerhouse business, must fight the battle of his life as all sides close in.
