Halloween is almost here, so find a costume and rock out!

Halloween_Movie
If I hear one more person in Quincy say, "I haven't dressed up for Halloween in years," I'm going to SCREAM! Maybe Chicago just has a more child-like mindset, but Halloween is HUGE up there.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, dresses up for multiple Halloween events. It's not just "what am I going to be," it's "how many costumes do I have to come up with?"

What I have found out is that if you haven't dressed up for Halloween here, then it's by your own choice. There are plenty of places to go wearing an amazing costume, and you can maybe even win some cash or prizes while you're at it.

So please wear a costume; trust me on this one. You will have so much more fun. Also, strive for something less stereotypical than the sexy version of something (i.e. sexy cop, nurse or basically anything Paris Hilton would wear) and avoid ready-made costumes from the store.

There is still time to put something together. I have faith in you! For some ideas go here and find easy creative last-minute costumes.

Now that I'm done trying to force you to dress up, please pick any of the amazing shows below and have a GREAT HALLOWEEN!

I have an "earworm" today, do you?

Earworm_hq So there is something called "earworms" and I’ve got one BIG time.

On Wikipedia, an author says that "earworms may be songs or tunes that become stuck in the part of the brain that rehearses verbal information.
This usually happens when a person sings or hums the song once
and then repeats it in his or her mind."

My current "earworm," which I pretty much always have one, is "Hope Now" by Addison Road.

It all started when I was listening to their music for the first time on Tuesday so that I could preview their acoustic show in Hannibal Wednesday. I preview shows every week by listening to music I’ve never heard before, but I don’t always get an "earworm." (Last weeks "earworm" after the show preview was "Nap and Cigarettees" by local band Fielder)

This may sound like some sort of horrific affliction, but actually it’s a good sign for a band. I hear music for around 8-10 hours every day, which means one song can knock another out of my head pretty easy. The true test is when I wake up with a song in my head, that "earworm" must of burrowed deep.

I will pretty much listen to any genre but "Hope Now" did surprise even me since it is a Christian indie/pop song, but you really can’t choose your "earworms." Trust me there are some past "earworms" I would definitely have chosen not to have (pretty much any song that gets stuck in your head because it’s annoying).

Out of curiosity, please let me know what your current "earworm" is and be honest with it, because it’s often not one to be proud of. Yesterday I accidentally heard that new Britney Spears song "Womanizer" and wanted to use an actual drill to get that "earworm" out of my head.

So anyway, Addison Road is playing Sunday in a sold out show with Building 429 at Madison Park Christian Church. If you have tickets, please let me know if they do the song justice live. Thanks!

Indie band performs acoustic detour Wednesday

Addisonroaduse
Addison Road will be taking a small detour on their tour with Christian heavy-weights Building 429 to play an acoustic set at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Common Grounds on the Hannibal-LaGrange College campus.

The vocals have a bit of a Michelle Branch feel through most of the songs, but when you get to the pop-punk with more attitude-driven "All That Matters," there’s actually a bit of Avril Lavigne, too. (I mean that in the nicest way possible).

Long-story-short, their vocals are nice and have some great harmonies.Barlowgirluse

Also, there’s definitely a Christian undertone lyrically, but it’s not slapping you in the face.

Stevie E, our resident Christian music expert here in The Herald-Whig newsroom, just informed me that Addison Road reminds him of another Christian act, Barlow Girl. You will have to make your own decision on that one.

As an acoustic show, it could prove even more interesting. Plus it’s always nice to see a band you dig in an intimate setting. To get a taste of what to expect acoustically, check out a video here.

Here are the best comparison links of Addison Road sounding like Michelle Branch.

I’m sure it will be a great time, plus the set will be a good way to check out Addison Road if you missed your chance to get tickets to the Building 429 show at Madison Park Christian Church in Quincy Sunday.

Catch some feel good music Friday

Ericson Productions is presenting a jam-packed show Friday at Turner Hall, 926 Hampshire. (And yes, that pun was intended. Read on.)

If you are into jam bands, funk/roots music or alternative rock/blues; if you are young, old or in between; if you like chill lounge shows or fast-paced dancing; or if you are into all of the above, then definitely go to this show.

Now just because all of those descriptions apply, please do not think this is a scattered lineup, because it is actually one of the most organized and cohesive shows I’ve seen lately.

LINEUP

Chicago’s Strain Busy Sky has a musically jam band feel with a bluesy lead-singer and a sense of humor when it comes to writing songs.

Revision
Revision

"Would you laugh at me cause I watch Tom and Jerry; would you laugh at me because my back is hairy; even though I’m 23." — Strain Busy Sky, "Laugh At Me"

Revision out of Ithaca, NY, says on its MySpace page that they are a "band that loves to play music," and when you listen to them, you know this is true.

Quincy’s Fielder will headline the show, and as I’ve said in the past, it is always a good time to listen to them. Dancing and/or chilling as they play are equal options, so there is no reason to say you don’t feel like catching the show.

"I guess the story of about where we live; it’s the picture perfect river town up on a hill." — Fielder, "Shadows In Replay"

Support local music and go to a SHOW!

Thanks for showing up to support local music

If you didn’t see live music this weekend, it wasn’t because of a lack of options. I saw eight bands and only went to two of the 12 shows in the area.

In great anticipation for a metal show Friday, I may have built it up in my head a bit. Don’t get me wrong, Small Time Crook put on a good performance and Otto’s Daughter played Turner Hall like it was a sold out show at the Double Door in Chicago. However, it wasn’t quite the show I had hoped for because of the sound.

Let me be clear. Turner Hall was NOT running the board Friday night. It was another company, and I don’t want to point blame, because I don’t know who was running sound checks or anything. All I do know is during Small Time Crook, the vocals were way over the music and you couldn’t feel the thudding in your chest. Small Time is more of a standard heavy metal band with guitar solos and screaming vocals.

Shirley_manson
Shirley Manson
of Garbage

Generally, this kind of metal music is mostly about guitar riffs and breakdowns in the music and should leave the attendee with aches in their calf and neck muscles and a minor case of tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Unfortunately, it was low enough that I could talk and not lose my voice from straining over the music.

Otto’s Daughter had the opposite problem with the music blaring at the same or above level of the vocals. That was especially heart-breaking, since the recordings I’ve heard of lead singer Jacqueline Van Bierk have her sounding a bit like Shirley Manson of Garbage. They were dead-on in adding the word "pop" in front of metal when describing their sound, and Van Bierk definitely puts on a show as she jumps and spins around during each song.

Sadly I missed Coffin Builder, but I must commend them for sticking around for the other sets that night.

All in all, it was definitely fun, but not quite the metal show I’m used to seeing in an underground venue in Chicago.

Saturday night showed that even with most people slowing on their spending, they will still open up their wallets for a benefit rock show. Winter’s West Wing had the largest turnout at a local show I’ve seen since I’ve been here, and the crowd wasn’t just standing back from the stage taking it in. From the beginning of the show, people were standing in front of the stage, on the balcony and around the back listening.

CJ’s Tribute Band, who played one night only to honor Cory Wilkey, took the stage a bit early and there were not as many people there yet. They definitely played for Cory by going more in the blues direction and everyone that was there seemed to enjoy it.

As the crowd grew, Chew Toy of Macomb performed.

When 8:58 started, everyone began moving a bit and reacting to what they were listening too.

Then Torque took the stage, and people crowded even closer while nodding their heads.

Fielder is when there was more out-and-out dancing, and it was packed in front of the stage.

By the time Wilkey’s old band Predawn Hour performed, it was elbow-to-elbow and the crowd was singing and screaming the entire time.

From hanging out with Cory, I  know that he would have loved the event. It was a true tribute to a great local musician.

If you were at these shows or any of the several others that took place this weekend, then you understand where I’m coming from. If you were not, then by now I hope you are kicking yourself for missing your chance. (Well, maybe not actually kicking yourself, but at least saying, "I really should find a show to see next weekend." I can help with that if you check back Thursday for the live event postings for the upcoming weekend.)

Have a great week!

Local musicians join together to honor one of their own

Cj_tribute_band1a
Arguably the biggest concert this weekend is Cory Wilkey’s benefit Saturday.

He was an amazing guitar player with Predawn Hour, Porselain and CJ and the Big Brother Band and an amazing person, so it’s no surprise that area musicians want to honor him with a rock show.

First up is CJ’s Tribute Band, which formed for this one night only with Cory’s brothers, Jason and Derek Wilkey, and his best friend, Rick Cate.

Also performing is Cory’s former band, Predawn Hour, and friends Torque, Fielder, 8:58 and Chew Toy.

Having this many local rock bands under one roof is rare and going to be a great time. I want to commend the organizers for putting such a big show together.

North Hollywood pop-metal band to rock region

Daughter

North Hollywood’s Otto’s Daughter is rolling into the area Thursday night to play a rock show at the Blueprint Lounge in Hannibal, then will head to Quincy Friday for a metal show at Turner Hall with Quincy’s Small Time Crook and Coffin Builder.

Otto’s Daughter is an electronic pop-metal band that began in New York City with original members, guitarist Jim Robbins and lead vocalist Jacqueline Van Bierk. Bassist Roman Campbell and drummer Gilbert Herrara join Robbins to back up the interesting vocals from Van Bierk.

Youtube commenter described Van Bierks voice as "a bit of the girl from Garbage [rock/grunge band]." After listening to their music online, I am inclined to agree. Anyone who enjoys Garbage will understand how rare of a find this could be.

I understand that their theatrical stage performance, self-described as Gwen Stefani meets Rob Zombie, is their strength. Which is quite promising, considering the quality of their recordings is good.

The latest album "A New Kind of Heroine" is currently available at CD Baby and iTunes, and a new release is planned for 2009.

"Otto’s Daughter’s ‘A New Kind of Heroine’ is one mean sounding disc! The female fronted band has a hard hitting metal sound, dark vocals, and just the right amount of electronic elements to keep you heavily stimulated from beginning to end." — Eric or Alternative Explosion!

Otto’s Daughter hopes to continue touring and join a national tour with an established band in the future.

Otto’s Daughter (pop-metal)

Octoberfest: Not just for beer drinkers

Fielder_2

Fall is the perfect time to see a rock/roots band outside at a beautiful Winery during Octoberfest. (Yes, one can consume wine instead of beer on this occasion.)

Quincy’s Fielder is a fun, chill group of guys that play great originals, but also play some really fun covers. Chances are if you’ve seen them, you love them, if you haven’t, then trust me it will be a good time.
