Talk of Bret Michaels' show bringing back memories

Bret Michaels

Bret Michaels

Since the news broke of Bret Michaels performing April 28 at Backwaters in Quincy, I’ve heard many people talk about how they saw Bret Michaels perform with his band Poison and the group Ratt on July 9, 1987, at the Hannibal Riverfront Amphitheater.

One person who works in the Circulation Department of The Quincy Herald-Whig has a plan to perform with Michaels, because at that 1987 show, he spoke with Michaels about performing with him and was told that maybe they would share a stage one day. Here is Dave Davis’ story:

“I attended the Poison/Ratt show down at the Hannibal riverfront the summer after my sophomore year at Keokuk Senior High School. We jockeyed for position at the very front near the stage that was separated by a metal fencing and located about 15 feet from the stage. Just after Poison finished their set, I happened to see someone working backstage that I had wrestled with in Hannibal. I yelled and got his attention, and he came over and asked me if I wanted to come back and help load the equipment from the stage to the trailer. He stuck a backstage access sticker on my chest, and I hopped the fence.

“After we had finished loading the last speaker cabinet, we hung out near the bus and Bret came out and talked to us briefly. I told him that ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ was the first song I had learned on guitar and asked him the story behind the song, which he went on to tell me was about heartbreak. I then jokingly asked if he could play the song along with me, and he said, ‘Maybe someday we will share a stage together,’ and patted me on the shoulder.

“Now that he plans to play in Quincy, and at a smaller venue, I plan on doing just that. I will be emailing his Facebook page and letting him know I plan on taking him up on that offer and ask to perform “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” with them that night. Of course I don’t plan on getting a response, but if I start an online petition, perhaps I can make it happen, even if its backstage, or on the bus.”

Does anyone else have a Poison or Bret Michaels story? I’d love to read them.

Logos

Logos, Fielder and Predawn Hour killed it at Turner Hall Friday

I was able to get to the Turner Hall show Friday night in time to catch the end of Fielder’s set and all of Logos’ performance. I count myself lucky for that,  and anyone who wasn’t at the show — the turnout was not that impressive—  should count themselves as quite unlucky. This may sound a bit dramatic, but in the word’s of Predawn Hour drummer Danny Mabie, Quincy history was made last night as a trio of young men effortlessly put on one of the most entertaining performances in the area of late.

Logos

Logos

It is nearly impossible to get across how incredibly talented these three young performers, but I will try, so that next time they roll into Quincy people will be prepared to give them the reception they deserve.

Not to discount the performances by Fielder and Predawn Hour — they were truly on their game last night. Fielder is on the verge of releasing its new album April 3 at Turner Hall, which I’ve hear wonderful things about, and Predawn Hour not only welcomed back long-time band brother and bassist Kyle Mabie after an unfortunate illness, but also added the very talented Brad Miller on rhythm guitar and harmonies. Miller is formerly of the area band Antidote. These two bands have a ton of original material and truly shine on a lineup together, and I can speak for everyone at the show last-night when I say thank you to both of them for bringing a band like Logos to the area to add a new flavor to the music scene.

To give everyone an idea of Logos’ sound, KZZK DJ Naturally Nate and I were trying to pin down some current influences for Logos and came up with early Incubus meets Wolf Mother. However, their 70s influences are much more prevalent. These guys were moving around on stage, dressed, playing and singing like there was a time-machine behind the stage curtain set to 1973 and they just walked out of it. When lead-singer Cullen O’Donnell started turning his doubleneck guitar, I knew we were in for a show. His vocals are ridiculously clean and his range was nearly too big for the room.

When O’Donnell was asked if the band was aware of the history of the stage they had just performed on, he said they had been told about it when they first arrived. For such a heavily 70s influenced band, it couldn’t be more perfect to play than at a venue that had its heyday in that same decade with the likes of Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent and more performing to packed houses.

Back when, according to Chris Cornwell of Fielder, Quincy truly cared about live music and I couldn’t agree more. The stories all of our parents tell about this area’s concerts make it sound more like a St. Louis-sized town than a town where some people wonder if there is even enough entertainment to talk about. Well I believe there is enough and with bands like Fielder, Predawn Hour, Mob Action, Texas Funerals and more putting in such a big effort to bring in regional and national acts, we could have that heyday again. That is, if people will remember that a jukebox in a bar will never, no matter how good of a sound system, sound as good as the first live chords strummed from a guitar or the bass drum pounding in your chest.

Don’t worry if you are kicking yourself for missing Friday’s show, because Logos says they will be back to the area for another show. For now I leave you all with a statement I truly stand by — support local music and go to a show!
