ANSWERS to music trivia questions from Friday

Martin-Cate

I wrote a blog yesterday with some music trivia questions of my own in honor of the annual popular event QND Music Trivia being held tonight. I didn’t write the questions to totally stump anyone, but wanted to have them be quite random and genre crossing, so let me know what you think. Thanks for playing!

Below are the answers:

1. What band is Lou Reed best-known for fronting? The Velvet Underground

2. Which pop star sang the hook on Flo Rida’s 2009 hit “Right Round”? Ke$ha

3. Who was the only continuous member through many member changes of hardcore punk band Black Flag? Greg Ginn

4. Who is the youngest Grammy winner ever? Leann Rimes

5. What is the name of the musical side project of Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue? Sixx:A.M.

Lou Reed.

How I would do a music trivia contest

Lou Reed.

This weekend I will be participating for the first time in the incredibly popular QND Music Trivia contest.

Martin-Cate

I’ve lived here for almost four years, but have previously worked every weekend of this annual event, but not this year. I cannot wait to play, I love talking music and am competitive, so I’m pretty sure this is great for me.

I have been known to not do so good, when put on the spot, but I hear we can some deliberation time and will be writing our answers down, so that should help. I don’t even know the name of my team, but was told that it placed sixth out of 60 teams last year.

I do not claim to be a music expert, but in my very first post on this blog made Aug. 21, 2008, I said:

“I don’t know everything about one genre of music, but I do know a little about a lot of different genres. When you are working in the music industry, this is important.”

I have asked a few veterans of this particular trivia night for a few tips and most have said to know some current tunes and lots of classics, but that the categories change yearly. Basically there is no real way to prepare, I think that it is one of those “either you know or you don’t know” kind of things.

I will let you all know next week how I do, cross your fingers for me!

Below are some questions I would ask at trivia, try and answer without cheating:

1. What band is Lou Reed best-known for fronting?

2. Which pop star sang the hook on Flo Rida’s 2009 hit “Right Round”?

3. Who was the only continuous member through many member changes of hardcore punk band Black Flag?

4. Who is the youngest Grammy winner ever?

5. What is the name of the musical side project of Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue?

I will post the answers tomorrow morning, so check back!

Great music mag Paste bought by website

Cover of a print version of Paste Magazine that I have at home.

I love Paste Magazine and was a print subscriber for years up until last year, when it become an online-only publication.

Recently, the mag was bought by an online music site, Wolfgang’s Vault. I’ve written about the magazine a couple times in the paste, including finding a regional musician spotlighted in early 2009.

As I said before, the print magazine would come with a compilation CD of great up and coming artists, which as you will imagine made the publication worth every penny. I miss getting the publication in the mail, as it was beautifully designed and the CD was great, it was like getting a mix tape from a friend that knows their indie music.

I am glad that Wolfgang’s Vault felt the need to purchase the mag, as Paste’s editor-in-chief Josh Jackson told the Associated Press, that the sale brings financial stability for the the magazine. I think the Vault is a great site as well, it has the most amazing posters and albums from concerts I can only wish I had attended. I am working on a fund to purchase some as the site does know what it’s content is worth.

Jackson also told the AP that he will continue to edit Paste’s content, so the magazine will go on. Yay!

Check out both Paste Magazine and Wolfgang’s Vault to see two great places for music on the web.

Stage and steps in the main chapel of the Kroc Center.

Kroc Center planning to host concerts and more

Stage and steps in the main chapel of the Kroc Center.

Balcony area in the main chapel of the Kroc Center.

Last week as part of the YP Quincy board, I was given a tour of the soon to be finished Kroc Community Center by the new operations manager Chad Rodgers.

The Kroc Center is a Salvation Army $24.5 million facility. It features 96,000 square feet of program space, including a fitness and aquatic center, classrooms and more.

Rodgers said he hopes the project will be completed in September.

The neat part to me was during the tour of the huge main chapel (featured in the photo above and to the right), he started mentioning things like “when we have concerts.” He even talked about the professional sound system and showed us where the engineering board will go. There is a balcony and tons of floor space and the stage can be extended and includes a large backstage area.

He also said that there would be the possibility for concerts and events in the main basketball gym, which is a huge space with tall ceilings and another balcony-type space.

I am so excited that there will be another venue in the area, especially one equipped to have all ages shows and already will include pro audio.

Rock icon to show ‘Idol’ how it is done

Aerosmith's "Greatist Hits" vinyl album.

Tonight is the start of the new version of “American Idol.”

Some of you will say, “so what,” but others, like me, may admit to this being a guilty pleasure. Unless you are the Whig’s Steve Eighinger, on the right in the logo, where this is not a guilty anything, but a wide open love affair that he wears on his sleeve. See his popular “Idol” blog here.

Some say the quality of the show will be gone without original judge Simon Cowell and they may be right, but one of the greatest performers of all time will be taking his place. Oh how I love thee Steven Tyler! If you do not know who that is, then you are either really young and unable to educate yourself yet, or you may be a bad bad person.

He is only the frontman for Aerosmith, one of the biggest rock bands of all time. I personally have three albums on vinyl and listen to them often. To tie him to today a bit more, did you watch the Golden Globes Sunday? Well, if you did, then you saw Diane Warren, writer of “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me,” which was sang by Cher in “Burlesque,” win for best original song. Miss Warren was also the writer of one of Aerosmith’s more recent ballads “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing,” which was the theme of the action movie “Armageddon.” OK, I’m done playing six degrees of Kevin Bacon, which by the way, he was on the Globes too.

Kevin Bacon in a commercial.

Random sidenote: I love this new commercial he is in.

Along with Tyler, Randy Jackson will return and Jennifer Lopez will join them. Should be interesting at least, although Lopez’s attempt at joking about judging singing as she presented a Golden Globe Sunday fell flat.

Either way, I am very excited to see how it all goes tonight and in the coming weeks, but don’t worry I don’t blog much on the topic, leaving that up to our “Idol” guru Eighinger.

One thing I do want to mention is that I helped judge a “Idol” contest for WGEM in July and our winner LaRon Grant went on to perform in front of the judges in Milwaukee, I can’t wait to see if he made it past the first round. He was not allowed to say so yet. Read this blog here.

Below is a previous blog post I did on some of my favorite “Idol” performances:

Here are a few of my favorite “moments” from years past. They are just a few, so please let me know what your favorites are.“A Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin as performed by Kelly Clarkson (season 1). I’m pretty sure it was this performance that sealed the deal for me loving the show and that high note, WOW.

“Hello,” by Lionel Richie as performed by David Cook (season 7). Hands down this the best arrangement by an “American Idol” contestant. It is amazing and it clinched Cook’s win.

“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as performed by Katharine McPhee (season 5). Jason Castro of season 7 also did a good version here.

“I Hate Myself for Loving You,” as performed by Amanda Overmyer (season 7)

“Come Together,” as performed by Carly Smithson (season 7)

“Let It Be” by the Beatles as performed by Brooke White (season 7)

Kelly Clarkson singing "A Moment Like This," at the finale of the first season of "Idol."

“Summertime” as performed by Fantasia Barrino (season 3)

“Hemmorrhage,” by Fuel as performed by Chris Daughtry (season 5). First time someone nailed a modern rock song on the show.

“Hallelulah,” by Leonard Cohen (Jeff Buckley’s version) as performed by Jason Castro (season 7).

“Stuff Like That There,” performed by Kelly Clarkson (season 1). Apparently she can sing any type of song. This is great.

“Unchained Melody,” performed by Clay Aiken (season 2). I love this song, and I know Simon does as well. It’s one of the best covers I’ve heard, and he hits that high note.

“Dangerously In Love” by Beyonce as performed by Stephanie Edwards

“I’m A Woman,” as performed by
Melinda Doolittle (season 6).

“A Moment Like This,” by Kelly Clarkson (season 1) when she won. It was just a very emotional moment and that part towards the end when she looks up and barely sings “I can’t believe it’s happening to me,’ gets me every time. I know. I’m a softie.

I will admit that I used to love Reba McEntire’s song “Fancy” when I was little and Kellie Pickler does a decent job of it here.

“You Give Love A Bad Name,” by Bon Jovi as performed and arranged by Blake Lewis (season 6). I think it’s really interesting to hear this song done this way. Kudos for Blake doing something different.

“This Is My Now” by Jordin Sparks (season 6) when she won. Again, it’s emotional, and there’s always that moment during the song when the music drops back and the singer’s voice cracks very dramatically.

“A House is Not a Home,” by Burt Backarack and performed by Tamyra Gray (season 1). Best part is that last note, it nearly gives you chills.

Here are some auditions that I remember and like:
Amanda Overmyer (season 7)

Paris Bennett (Billy Holiday song is best) (season 5)

Sundance (season 7)

Martin-Cate

Josiah Leming sings “To Run.” He was the homeless kid from season 7 that cried a lot.

Melinda Doolittle (season 6)

David Cook sings “Livin On a Prayer” (season 7)

Michael Johns “I’ve Been Loving You To Long” (season 7)

Asia’h Epperson sings “How Do I Live” (season 7). It is emotional.

“Check Yes Or No” as performed by Drew (season 7). This is a rare look at an old school country singer.

Let me know what you think tonight!

The Grammy’s announces performers

The awards season is fully underway and I am excitedly waiting for my favorite, which is the Grammy’s. The top music event will be televised Feb. 13.

What I love about this show is that it is like if all semi-award-worthy musicians went to the same high school, then this is their reunion where they get to show their talent or lack thereof.

The Grammy performers for this year that have been announced are Arcade Fire, Eminem, Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Miranda Lambert and Katy Perry, so far.

As I previously wrote about here, Eminem leads with the most nods.

I’m stoked about Lady Gaga performing to see what she does and pleasantly surprised that Arcade Fire will be performing at the show. I did see them as the musical guest on SNL recently, so I knew they were becoming more mainstream popular. I first saw them live at Lollapalooza in 2005 and they put on one of the most energy-driven performances I have ever seen.

Other top nominees include Bruno Mars with seven and Lady Antebellum and Jay-Z.

Local benefits need your support for veterans this month

Martin-Cate

This past weekend was the two-day second annual “Local Area Musicians Charity Fundraiser” at Turner Hall.

Sadly, the crowd was a bit so-so. This is unfortunate, because the event benefited Leaps For Love, an organization that aids family’s of children with cancer. To read the full story, click here.

Let’s all do a better job of supporting the next two benefits this month, a Patrons for Patriots concert Jan. 22 at Turner Hall, featuring Cheeks McGee, Predawn Hour, Fielder and more musical acts, plus local comedian Landon Meyer. The event was organized mostly by Scarlett Meyer, formerly of Hull, Ill., with a committee that was formed to collect donations and get the word out. Also, involved in the event is Guitars For Vets, a great organization that works with veterans on guitar lessons and gives each a new guitar. Former Quincyan Steve Stoner is heavily involved in the St. Louis part of this group.

Also, there is a benefit Jan. 23 to be held for Quincyan Staff Sergeant Derek Jennings, who was injured in Afghanistan in October. This  event will feature music by Cheeks McGee and Fielder and be held from 2-7 p.m. at the Eagles Club. More information to come.

This will be a big weekend of entertainment for a good cause, so I challenge everyone to make the minor effort of attending to honor those that have made the major effort of defending our country.

Jessica M. Martin-Cate

* There will be more coverage of both benefits in the Quincy Herald-Whig and on The Local Q.
