MARTIN-CATE: Music for all moods

(Photo manuplation by Jessica M. Martin-Cate)

I believe we all have certain songs that appeal to us depending on our mood, below I give you some of my options for when I’m up, down and ready to party.

HAPPY MOOD
On my iPod I like anything by Tool, Erin McCarley, Rise Against, sometimes Deftones and many others. See “Feeling Down,” for my record options for this category. I’m not sure why they cross over, but they do, maybe because when you are down, you want to feel happy (wow deep).

Martin-Cate

READY TO PARTY
At home I head for the records and put in “I Love Rock N’ Roll” By Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and/or “Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits” album or the soundtrack “American Hardcore: History of American Punk” and sometimes my Against Me! albums. On my iPod, I like Apocolypse Hoboken, Against Me! and Rise Against and I have a thing for Pink, kind of a guilty pleasure, but she’s kind of awesome.

FEELING DOWN
I tend to want to listen to whole albums. At home, I like to put “Tapestry” by Carol King or “Hotel California” by the Eagles in the record player, when all I have is my iPod, then I will play anything by Tool, “Everything In Transit” by Jack’s Mannequin or  “Love On the Inside,” by Sugarland, another guilty pleasure, but oh well.

What do you listen to depending on your mood?

adema

Adema reunites, begins to collapse and comes to Mount Sterling

Fluckey

Rock band Adema is from Bakersfield, Calif., and is currently on tour. However, vocalist and guitarist Tim Fluckey is a Mount Sterling native and is bringing the band home for a surprise show. Read the whole story here.

Although, the group is not coming to perform with out controversy surrounding it.

According to www.bakersfield.com, the newly reunited Adema is facing some of the same issues that broke up the group to begin with. Original lead-singer Mark Chavez has reportedly quit the group again last month and bassist Dave DeRoo is reportedly in jail in Connecticut after an arrest Jan. 29.

The site also reports, that this leaves Fluckey and Kris Kohls “struggling to honor contractual obligations and perform the remaining dates of the tour.” Touring guitarist Marc DeLeon is currently performing shows with the band.

Either way, it is amazing that the group is ready to perform in a small town bar for some very excited fans.

Do you have to listen to lovey dovey mush mushy songs for Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is near and husbands and boyfriends are busy planning to set the stage for a romantic evening, possibly to not get into trouble with their lady. I am personally not obsessed with the day that throws up gallons of pink and red hearts, balloons, flowers and more, but don’t mind it at the same time.

Instead of getting in the mood for a romantic evening with “normal” lovey dovey music, why not pop in a playlist of local artists with some songs being based on true love and others possibly more in the fun vein.

Martin-Cate

Here is a list of love songs submitted by the local artists themselves, with descriptions:

• “WIKI WIKI,” by Cheeks McGee, who said it is “about all the good things about love.”

• “Pull Me In,” by The Graduate on the “Only Every Time” album. Submitted by lead-singer Corey Warning.

• “Happy Hate Song,” by Esther Moore. Moore said this song is “for all the people out there who don’t like Valentine’s day so much.”

• “Just Tonight,” by Fielder. Member Scott Smith says this song is about “making the most of a night with the one you love.”

• “My Love,” by Double Vision, submitted by Jonathan Lindsay, who said “we plan on releasing this for free on Valentine’s Day.” my love-final mixdown

• “Whiskey on my Breath (and your memory on my mind),” by Kathy Brink. Brink said this song is about love lost.

• “Remember When,” by Days Taken from the album “Weight of the World,” submitted by lead-singer Charlie Scarber.

• “For Granted,” by George Cate from the album “Motivated Low.” Cate said, “this song is about taking love for granted and losing something that was good.”

• “Caught (In Your Trap),” by Clear Moments from the album “QuinCD.”

• “Where Do We Go From Here,” by Kathy Brink. “This song talks about whether or to bring a good friendship into a full-fledged relationship,” Brink said.

• “Secret Sin,” by Predawn Hour. Lead-singer George Cate said this song is about “wanting something you can’t have.”

• “Psycho With A Capital S,” by The Funions. Rodney Hart submitted this and said “It’s an anti-Valentine’s song about a person who isn’t quite right. She’s psycho
with a capital S, phony with a capital F and wrong with a capital R.”

• “You Are,” by Esther Moore.

• “I Walk Alone,” by Fielder. Smith said this “song is about regrets. We all have them. Perhaps a mistake with taking on a relationship. A mistake on not taking on a relationship. We’d like to think it ends on a positive note though.”

• “Better Side of me,” by Days Taken from the album “Weight of the World,” submitted by lead-singer Charlie Scarber.

• “Blink,” by George Cate. Cate said “this song is about fortunate love.”

• “It’s You,” by Double Vision from the album “Bifocal.”

What are your favorite Valentine’s Day songs?

Superbowl halftime shows have hits and misses

Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and more perform at the Superbowl in 2001. Yes kids, that is the new American Idol judge and yes he is a musician.

Lastnight’s halftime show at the Super Bowl wasn’t what it could’ve been. I’m sure most people saw the event and can agree that the choreography for the field dancers was pretty cool, but the sound was terrible.

When I think of halftime shows, I think of great and sometimes random collaborations, or just amazing full out medley performances.

I have come up with a few of my favorites:

• Michael Jackson in 1993, his performance was said to of doubled the ratings for a normal halftime show. He was great.

Random side note, Diana Ross in 1996 was great as well.

• Kings of Rock and Pop theme with Aerosmith, Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears, Nelly, N’Sync and Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock. I mostly just liked the hodgepodge randomness of all these people singing one song. Plus how weird is it to see Britney look good?

The Rolling Stones did great and the idea of The Who was great, although the sound was not so great last year. Notice how I skipped the silly “wardrobe malfunction” year with Miss Janet if you’re nasty and Mr. Timberlake.

What are your favorite year’s for the halftime show?
