Jake Owen, Madd Hoss Jackson entertain a large crowd Saturday in Quincy
Mar 27th
Country star Jake Owen came to town Saturday to perform at the Local firefighters 63 fundraiser at Morrison Theater. (Read the story here.)
A crowd of about 1200 were being entertained early on by a lively performance by local act Madd Hoss Jackson, during which Owen met with some of his fans from his online fan club.
Also, earlier today, members from Owen’s band showed up at the grand opening of Second String, a local music shop owned by Rodney Hart and Sheryl Collins. The shop had donated a guitar to the concert that was signed by Owen and Madd Hoss Jackson and then raffled off for charity at the show.
Below are photos from the evening:

Jake Owen, left, meets one of his fans. She was so excited to see the man in person that also graced her t-shirt.

These gal pals from California, Mo., came to specifically see Owen, saying "have Jake, will travel."

Local music venue Kix Club shutting down
Mar 15th
The Kix Club has had live music long before it was called the Kix Club, but lately it has become rather well-known as a stopping place for touring acts.
The first time I visited the venue, I pulled up and parked in the crowded lot and made my way through the throng of show attendees smoking outside. I was surprised to have to walk down into the venue, but like the atmosphere of an underground music club. The place was packed and people were enjoying themselves and bands played at the opposite end of the long and narrow space.
Sadly the owner has decided to shut down after 10 years and will close the doors for the last time Tuesday, March 15.
On Sept. 27, 2010, I posted on this blog that The Kix Club had been labeled as a top Illinois indie venue on the respected site Indie On the Move (read the post here). I definitely agreed, with bands like Carusella from Israel and bands from Germany and acts from all over the U.S., it couldn’t be denied that the venue was making a mark. (Read a post here with an interview with Kix Club booker Kurt Jansen on how he compiled the lineups.)
As I strolled through old posts on my blog, nearly every week for the past few years had a show listed at the Kix Club and almost all of them included an out-of-town band. The establishment has become a place music fans could count on for new music, cheap drinks and a plain old good time.
I even included the club as a venue stop in a post I wrote on my idea of “perfect musical pairings, all star lineups and more.”
What are your favorite memories of the Kix Club?

MARTIN-CATE: Music trivia question
Mar 9th
I was taking with a friend at work and the question of what veteran band has all of its original members came up.
Someone else suggested Aerosmith, but neither one of us thought that was right, so I looked it up on Answers.com and the questions was “What band has all of its original members from 30 years ago?” The answer it gave were ZZ Top, Aerosmith and Rush.
We thought maybe Rush was right, not Aerosmith and ZZ Top seemed the most accurate. I mean, how hard is it to keep three members from fighting? Well any band will say, it is still tough.
What are your thoughts?
