IAROCFEST: Harlot and Predawn Hour prepare for music festival in Iowa

IAROCFEST will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 27-29, in Keosauqua, Iowa. The event will feature Skid Row, Slaughter, Kissmania and many more, including several local bands. (Read the story here)

Check out Q&As on two Quincy bands that will be at the big three-day festival performing:

HARLOT: Robert Peterson, Harlot bassist

MEMBERS
Trish Peterson – vocals, Robert “Pete” Peterson – bass, Bobby Knight – guitar, Stephen Peterson – guitar and Josh Cress – drums.

SOUND
“Harlot has a very eclectic sound that you won’t find anywhere else. Driven by Trish the vocalist, we do music from both female and male fronted bands. Trish has a wide vocal range that gives us the opportunity to do music other bands don’t do. From Joan Jett and Pat Benetar to Metalica and System of a Down, Trish rocks them all. Throw in a little Poison and you have quite a party. I love to play rock, but also enjoy slap style funk and alternative music such as Primus, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Guano Apes. Bobby on Guitar is great at covering the classic rock leads, while Stephen is more into the newer stuff and nails the leads on those. Josh on drums is much more into the newer music but can cover anything we ask him to.”

BIO
“Trish was asked to sing for a local band, the band was also looking for a bassist. I sat in temporarily and was then asked to join permanently and later Bobby Knight came in as a second guitarist. Trish, Bobby and I left the band due to differing tastes in music and then picked up Josh Cress as the new drummer and then added Stephen Peterson on guitar.”

BOOKING IAROCFEST
“We met Scott the promoter and organizer of Iarocfest at a bar in Keokuk. We discussed the Iarocfest and Scott called us shortly after to perform. He told us that he chose Harlot because of our set list he saw on FaceBook. He said he had other bands wanting to get in, but we offered a lot of music that others did not. He saw songs by Joan Jett, Jefferson Airplane, Pat Benetar, Heart, Alanis Morrisette, Lita Ford and other female artists and told us that is exactly what he needed. Even though we also cover a lot of male-fronted bands these songs would be new for Iarocfest.”

PERFORMANCE AT THE FEST
“When people come to see a Harlot show, they can expect a very wide range of music from artists that no one else is covering in the area. Besides the female rockers we cover, you will hear AC/DC, Led Zepplin, Scorpions, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others. While Iarocfest is the biggest show we have done so far, we look at every gig as a big show. We come out to give our fans the best show they’ve seen and bring them back for more. At Iarocfest, you are going to see some of the best acts in the region, as well as some of the top national acts. This is definitely going to be the biggest party of the summer!”

FUTURE PLANS
“Our plan for the future is to just keep doing what we enjoy, playing Good old rock n’ roll for people to enjoy. We plan to keep growing our playlist and improving our show with every performance. We have gone from playing in a garage to sharing the stage with Skidrow, Slaughter and Kissmania in less than a year! If we can keep growing at this rate  who knows what the future may bring.”

PREDAWN HOUR: Danny Mabie, Predawn Hour drummer

MEMBERS
“Predawn Hour consists of George Cate on vocals and guitar, Kyle Mabie on bass and Danny Mabie on drums.”

SOUND
“The style of original music we play is influenced by many artists, including Alice in Chains, Candlebox and Faith No More to name a few.”

BIO
“The three of us have been playing together close to 10 years. George has a musical background with his family, as do Kyle and I, who are brothers. When conversations started rolling about what we were after, the music began to evolve. With a combination of 40 years experience playing out and writing music, we’re still eager to write and perform for current and new fans.”

BOOKING IAROCFEST
“We found IA ROCFEST on Facebook, I was surfing through the website and happened to stumble on their page. The promoter was looking for a few bands, so a press kit was sent. Within a couple days we were approached about playing on Saturday of the three day festival.”

PERFORMANCE AT THE FEST
“We’re very excited to go up and play some Quincy-based rock music. We have an hour of power ready to go. The set will consist of fan favorites like Home Road, Savior and Braille and possibly a Hank Williams Jr. cover.”

FUTURE PLANS
“Predawn Hour is in the midst of writing a new album. We’re looking at a possible 2012 release. This summer you can catch us at Tom Sawyer Days, which is July 3 with Nowake in Hannibal. Free music, news and show updates can be found at www.reverbnation.com.  Music is also available at iTunes.com.”

PRITCHETT: NSFA show, The Local Q Music Fest make for great weekend of music

Cheeks McGee, left, and The Graduate.

Jason Holler of Kentucky Knife Fight.

Friday May 6, and Saturday May 7, provided the most perfect weekend to put off studying for finals.

Friday evening the State Room hosted Kentucky Knife Fight, The Whiskey Folk Ramblers and the local favorites, The Texas Funerals. The unforgettable show kicked off with St. Louis’ Kentucky Knife Fight who is nominated for the Rock Band of The Year by The Riverfront Times in St. Louis. Then, The Whiskey Folk Ramblers followed, who came all the way from Fort Worth, Texas. These two bands back-to-back were a wonderful mesh of top notch Americana/folk rock that Quincy was lucky to be a part of. Then the Texas Funerals wrapped up the night with another night of death western rock. The Texas Funerals sealed the night with their last song “I’m Going to Town” before 12:30 a.m.

The Texas Funerals trombonist and guitarist, Pete Magliocco, was the opening act to part two of my weekend of procrastination.

Saturday May 7, The Local Q Fest enabled me to put off my homework for the entire afternoon when the festivities began at 2 p.m. The Local Q did a great job with picking the lineup; each act provided something for everybody. Acoustic to metal, if you listen to music, you were bound to catch something up your alley. My personal favorites of the day were Peach, The HipNecks, The Graduate and Cheeks McGee. The weather and the music helped deliver what I hope to become an annual event in Quincy.

The Local Q Fest couldn’t have came on a better weekend, and I believe it may go down as one of (if not the best) weekends of live music to ever hit Quincy, Ill.

Fans enjoyed lounging on the grass and clapping along to the music.

The HipNecks had the crowd paying attention.

The crowd danced and sang along all day.

The Graduate had the fans move closer to the stage to rock out.

Fans moved into the stadium for the Evening Show and got comfortable for more music.

Cheeks McGee and fellow musicians Kyle Mabie, left, and Danny Mabie, right, kicked off the Evening Show as fans flowed in.

The Hong Kong Sleepover took the stage and as the night went on, the music grew louder and the fans were ready to rock.

Predawn Hour kept the music going as the night continued and the crowd grew.

Copperview ended the night on a high note and the fans cheered.

LOCAL Q MUSIC FEST: From the event announcement to now, check out all the info

Below is a timeline of everything about The Local Q Music Fest from the announcement of the event to May 7. We are continuing to add new things, so check back!

PRITCHETT: Arcade Fire rocks St. Louis

Arcade Fire in St. Louis. (Photos by Daniel Pritchett)

The eight-piece indie-rock band Arcade Fire fresh out of Coachella Music Festival, finally graced the Midwest with a rare appearance April 21 in St. Louis at the Scottrade Center.

Arcade Fire has come out with three albums in their short and prosperous career since their formation in 2003, and their most recent album, “The Suburbs,” won the Grammy for Album of the Year. This well deserved award has allowed them to be the only band to my knowledge that has brought indie-rock to the arena circuit.

On April 21, The National kicked off the show with their relaxing and soothing alternative sound. Matt Berninger made himself a St. Louis hero when he disappeared into the huge crowd at the Scottrade Center during the song “Mr. November.” His 200 foot microphone cord helped him get personal and also wake the crowd up for the headlining act that was soon to follow.

After only about 15 minutes of waiting, Arcade Fire stormed on stage and instantly began “Ready to Start,” which ironically needed no introduction.

In the midst of the incredible visuals on the six projection screens, the band cycled through dozens of unique instruments throughout their show— a few of these were the accordion, the piano, three separate drum sets, several keyboards, violin, viola, mandolin and even a hurdy-gurdy. The combination of these visuals and the different sounds make the Arcade Fire one of the most original, unique and greatest rock bands to see live.

The crowd definitely didn’t have the atmosphere I was hoping for, but what crowd energy was lacking during the first half of their show was made up for when they played “Keep the Car Running,” then “Neighborhood (Tunnels),” followed by their crowd pleasing and appropriate song, “Wake Up,” off of my favorite album, “Funeral.”

Front man Win Butler admitted to the crowd that “his band is still getting used to this arena rock thing,” but after the encore the band was clearly comfortable rocking the arena with their epileptic strobe lighting affects that electrified their song “Month of May.”

Pritchett

Overall, I feel St Louis didn’t quite realize how lucky they were to witness this amazing show, but in my personal opinion Arcade Fire is about as good as it gets when it comes to live music.

The setlist:
Ready To Start
Rebellion
Laika
Empty Room
Modern Man
Rococo
The Suburbs
Intervention
No Cars Go
Hati
We Used To Wait
Keep the Car Running
Tunnels
Wake Up
——– Encore ——–
Month of May
Power Out
Sprawl II
