The Graduate asked for help making a live DVD and they got it
Oct 18th
Quincy and Springfield, Ill., band The Graduate played four farewell shows in August, one of which was at the State Room in Quincy. The band videotaped each show and is asking for pledges to make enough to produce a full live DVD.
Below is what lead-singer Corey Warning wrote on the page asking for pledges:
Last month The Graduate played four farewell shows around the Midwest. We filmed and recorded the concerts in the hopes of making a live DVD, and now we need your help to make it happen!
Everyone who backs the project (even for $1) will receive occasional project updates via email. These will include progress reports, rare photos, videos & audio clips, etc. These are exclusive to backers, so go ahead and throw down a buck!

MARTIN-CATE: Breakdown beginning — Support local music and go to a show
Oct 13th
The title of this post, Support Local Q Music and Go To a Show, is a phrase I started typing into this blog quite awhile ago, in fact it was first put into this blog about four days after it first launched on Aug. 21, 2008.
That may not seem like a long time in terms of a lifetime, but in terms of a blog, I think it is something. I started this blog as a way to connect the regional entertainment scene. This was before the Weekender section in the Herald-Whig, which I helped launch later, and long before The Local Q was a glimmer in my eye. I bring this up, because I was reminded of the time when I started this blog by the photo in the above graphic. I shot that that photo at rock show in Chicago in 2005.
I’ve always loved music, especially lesser known acts, who are striving for more. Lately, I have found myself swallowed up by life (a great life though) and less able to make it to all of the shows I mention, but you know what, it only takes a bit more effort. The way I still try and make it to shows, is I don’t waste my nights out at a plain bar, I make sure that I hear live music each time I venture out and make my night worth the effort.
So please, join me in this effort and Support Local Music & Go To a Show!
A few highlights:
Fielder is playing at Johnny Bang Bangs, there is a 12-year anniversary event at Down On the Corner in Marcelline and Raised On Radio will be at the Tindusters event this weekend.
Also, we at the Local Q have been talking about the big Oct. 25 concert with nationally touring act Skillet at the Oakley Lindsay Center for some time now and this week I got the chance to interview lead-singer John Cooper about the tour, plans for the future and the Quincy show. Read the interview here: http://www.thelocalq.com/node/2775

MARTIN-CATE: “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”
Oct 10th
Honestly, you probably didn’t miss me from my “Breakdown” and Local Q duties with the amazing coverage by part-timers Patrick Cornell and Jenny Dreasler this summer, with special help from Whig desk person Julie Ann Marra, but still I have been writing on this blog for nearly four years and I have missed all of you.
It was nice spending time at home over the summer, but I must say there were some exciting events that gave me the journalistic itch to get out there and cover some live music, such as the Rock Fest at the raceways, Tom Sawyer Days and the announcement that Skillet will be performing later this month.
Once I was back in the building in late August, I was put on a special project and had to defer again to Miss Marra to keep up this site that I love so dearly. Long story short, I am about half back to Local Q and am glad to be here!
I started this particular post to give you an overview of super fun things to do this month that I consider my favorites, but first, I need to go over a weird music situation that I’ve run into:
Now That’s What I Call Music!
My iPod feature on my iPhone is not working (Steve Jobs where are you?) and I needed some tunes while writing this post, so I scrounged around in my desk drawers and found the most random piece of music. Now I don’t mean random just because it is an actual, physical, compact disc, but because it is a “Now That’s What I Call Music” disc. I promise I am not kidding. The official title is “Now That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 5″ and it is from the year 2000, so you can only imagine the lovely songs that are flowing through my headphones at the moment. The track listing is posted to your right and it is full of gems, like, “Don’t Think I’m Not,” by Kandi, “Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely,” by the Backstreet Boys and so many more. Any CD that combines tracks by Mandy Moore, BBMak, Jessica Simpson and 98 Degrees, must be amazing, right? Oh no and sadly, this was the year I graduated from high school. My musical taste would suggest that I wore that graduation gown in the early ’90s or early ’80s or even early ’70s, but not when this CD came out. Oh well, I shall try to own it, I mean the disc does include a ballad by Sisqo, that’s credible, right?
