From the Band
The group formed in 2005 on the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. We spent the first couple of years playing basement shows and open mic nights. During this time we developed our sound and gathered a loyal local fan base. In 2008, we released our first full-length album which received a St. Louis River Front Times Award for "Album of the Year." Fast forward to 2010 and we are privileged to say we have another album under our belt, have traveled the country extensively and made a lot of friends along the way. We are proud to have opened up for acts like: Holly Golightly, The Legendary Shack Shakers, and Reverend Peyton, among others. Also, we have played after parties for Motorhead, The Black Keys, and The Dead Weather.

The band started when long-time friends AJ Allen and Sean McHargue decided to jam in a small basement room of Sean's house with two drum sets and a Gibson Les Paul. Things grew over the years as the band now boasts a five-piece lineup, hours of music, and a small following of loyal supporters. The chemistry onstage is like none other. NOWAKE brings energy, enthusiasm and most importantly, a wide variety of rock. From original tunes, such as "Not the Only One", "Our Hero" and "Awakening," to cover tunes from bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice in Chains and ZZ Top, NOWAKE brings it all to the table.

From the Band
Mike Coultas and Kathy Brink have been friends for over 20 years, but both were too busy in their respective bands to ever have the chance to work together. However, they recently teamed up to provide an alternative to a full band setting. Both seasoned performers, the duo provide a wide variety of songs, including covers of Keith Urban, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, Fleetwood Mac, R.E.M., Lady Antebellum, Pure Prairie League, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sheryl Crow and many more. Coultas has been playing guitar since the age of 11. His high school years were spent in local bands and, after a stint in the military, he joined “Two for the Show Trio”. For the next four years, he and his two bandmates traveled the U.S. in a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville hearse playing clubs, lounges, conventions and hotels. Somewhere along the way, they got a spot on The Gong Show – and won! He spent the last 26 years in a local band called “Quick Change”. He is currently playing with a group called “Boulevard”. Mike is also a prolific songwriter; one of his songs, “Solitary Lovers”, charted on the Billboard Country Charts for several weeks. Brink has been playing in various country, classic rock and blues bands since the age of 16, most recently The Undeniable and Little Sister. She has performed as a solo act, acoustic duo, in various local bands, as a Patsy Cline impersonator and with a few jazz bands, singing standards. Also a songwriter, she recently released a self-penned CD, “Stronger Than I Know”, with two tracks winning songwriting contests. You might even hear a few of those during a live performance. Brink and Coultas perform at several local wineries, as well as some smaller local venues. Both welcome the relaxed and intimate settings, and they enjoy adding harmonies to each others’ songs. Their schedules can be found on their respective websites, www.myspace.com/kathybrink and www.boulevardband.net.

About

This educational museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for two reasons. First, the house was built in 1835 and is historically significant from an architectural point of view. More importantly, this house is listed on the National Register because it was a crucial link in the Underground Railroad during the 1840's. Hundreds of slaves reached freedom in Chicago with a stop at the Dr. Richard Eells House. Today, The Friends of Dr. Richard Eells House have raised money to restore the house and this landmark is in the process of being restored.
